Hydroponics Bays are smaller than outdoor farms, but can allow for bases to be built in any area without concern for what Environment it is. Hydroponic farms require Water and Power to grow. Hydroponics have the advantages of always having 100% yield, are compact and lets you grow any crops (except cactus, for whatever silly reason). Sounds good, but the problem is that you're still dependent on having soil that has water, which usually means you'll be able to grow regular farms on that same soil, and when it comes down to it, actual farms are more efficient than hydroponics.

Buying more buildings in a town, doesn't really have much use right now. You COULD set up a type of base, in say, the Hub. Where you have sleep in one, hydroponics in another, crafting, storage and so on. But it sucks, since you cant build outside, so no mining close to your buildings. There is no taking over pre-build stuff in the game right now.

Your goals now are:-Have steady source of food from your farms-Have steady source of income from grog-Have steady source of resources for crafting (steel bars, iron plates, fabric, leather etc)-Setting up armor making-Setting up weapon making-Setting up crossbow making (this is made easier by a mod I made myself, since it gives you individual crossbow parts and robotics storage, so your production line wont bug out.

Armor/ crafting is late game and you will find better weapons then you can make for an extremely long time. But making solid armor is absolutely worth it. (If you are new to the game don’t equip heavy armor on anyone unless it’s blue quality or better even then heavy armor has more downsides then a mountain top)

Hydroponics has a number of benefits including better growth compared to plants that don’t use the system, sometimes up to 25% quicker growth. Plants in a hydroponic system also generally produce up to 30% more than plants in a regular growth medium like soil.

Shem is perfect. the place however is pretty homogeneous, the only settling tip i'd give is try to find a spot with water (max is 70% as far as i know), iron and stone (there are plenty of 100% or >90% spots) and one or two copper nodes. wind is often pretty weak however, and i'd recommend hydroponics because the fertility isn't as good as the maps suggest.
