In terms of overall performance, the M5 fairway wood was solid but not jaw dropping. The ball speed was very good on centered shots, and there was decent forgiveness. It doesn't launch the ball extremely high, but it is consistent on pure and thin strikes.

  • The TaylorMade M5 fairway wood is louder than its predecessor with a much more metallic impact sound. Its pitch is mid-high but not shrill. There is decent feedback through the hands, but audio feedback is lacking. Because all strikes are fairly loud, it’s hard to distinguish pure strikes from mediocre ones.

The sound, feel and performance is all very good and with a more compact head than the M6 fairway, the M5 should appeal to those with more speed and higher spin rates. However there is one issue and that is the price you have to pay for all this tech.

Main reason was to get more launch from the fairway and it has done exactly that. Off the tee I notice a little difference in height 10ft but from the fairway its so much easier to launch. Forgiveness wise off the heal they are the same but off the toe the M5 wins hand down.

I had both...M5 is larger and higher launching. Tend to go left on me. M3 was a better fit for me. M5 was faster and did feel better. The face angle on the M5 is more closed and the lie is more upright. Turf interaction felt better on the M5. But the tendency to go left made me get rid of it.

The shape of the sole is a little more 'smiley' to make it more forgiving as the curve on heel and toe creates a deeper centre point is able to get under the ball more easily. So that is all the usual areas brought up to date, but the real change is in the face which is made from a Ultra-High Strength C300 steel.

It dropped just 2.4% more carry distance between good and bad strikes than the most forgiving fairway wood of the year, and 6.3% less than the least forgiving. The SIM2 Max has a slightly bigger footprint than TaylorMade's SIM2 Titanium, making it more confidence inspiring. It looks good and sounds good, too.
