With the G400 fairway woods, Ping’s goal was to create more ball speed to help players hit the ball farther while keeping each club easy to hit. Ping used a maraging stainless steel face that is 28 percent thinner than the face in the G fairway woods. At impact, the face flexes 30 percent more, which results in a ball-speed increase of 2 mph.
To be fair the G400 fairway works well from all types of lie and the sound and feel were very solid and above average for the fairway sector. The Ping Alta CB shaft is slightly heavier in the butt to go with the heavier head to increase the MOI and changes colour from copper to black as you put it down at address, which is a nice touch.
The PING G400 SFT fairway wood has the hallmarks of the other G400 woods: the matte black crown and the Turbulators. Where it differs is in its shape. The G400 SFT FW is larger, particularly from front to back. It’s symmetrical and round, and the face looks a little shallower than the standard G400 FW.

The G400 has a new maraging steel face which Ping say is 20% stronger and 20% more flexible, alone they claim it delivers an extra 2mph of ball speed over the previous G model. 30% of the heads mass is located in the heads backweight (in the sole) which Ping reckon improves MOI and forgiveness by 25% - 44% over the competition.
