Hydroponics basins provide a much more fertile environment than soil (280% fertility, equivalent to 2x rich soil) and any crops planted in them will grow much more quickly. Unlike most appliances, they do not short circuit in the rain. This means they can be used outdoors in biomes with a growing season.

  • Possibly the main benefit of having the hydroponic basin is the ability to grow plants indoors within this object. To unlock the hydroponics basin and the ability to grow plants inside in Rimworld, the player will have to research the required item. Hydroponics is the research that will unlock the ability to build a hydroponics basin.

A hydroponics basin provides a highly fertile medium for growing food quickly. With the use of sun lamps, it can also be used for growing crops indoors. You’ll have a consistent supply of food in no time. That’s all there is to using the hydroponics in RimWorld. By the way, are you looking to figure out the food situation with a friend, perhaps?

There are a great many reasons for deciding to research and use hydroponics in Rimworld. I would even go as far to say it is an absolute game-changer. Once of the most common reasons a colony falls is due to a lack of food to each. This is particularly a problem in the winter when hunting is scarce and nothing grows outdoors.

you need hydroponics to grow ambrosia fruit in a controlled environment (cant remember if this is mod feature though) Mod feature. Hydroponic is intended to use on maps with severe climate (usually lacking any soil), or when you're building mountain base.

One of the biggest reasons hydroponics has become so popular is because recent studies on hydroponic farming have shown it to have many benefits. Plants grown hydroponically are of exceedingly high quality, occupy less space, and consume fewer resources than traditional growing methods. How do you farm in RimWorld? Not much, technically.

If you have biofuel refineries available, you can use food produced by hydroponics to fuel chemfuel generators to help power the greenhouse array. This is so efficient that it violates thermodynamics, and leaves you with spare food for your colonists as well. In 1.0 you need to place the sun lamp's growing zone manually.

I think it's more of a balancing thing. Hydroponics yield an incredible amount when used properly. There have to be some downsides to avoid making them overpowered.

Why use hydroponic farms over an indoor area? Close. 3. Posted by 4 years ago. Archived. Why use hydroponic farms over an indoor area? I'm still learning so forgive me if this is common knowledge, but what's the benefit of a hydro farm over an indoor farm? Solar flares would be instant death for any crops so I don't understand. 14 comments.

Actually it seems like this actually is a better solution even for the crops you can plant in hydroponic basins (except rice) as it gives you safety from shortouts (crops will survive if just the sunlamp goes off for a day to solar flares) and a bigger Bonus (IIRC normal crops just give you 115% growth in hydroponic basins, compared to 140% in fertile soil ... only exception= rice with 235% in hydroponic basins)
