Monsoon seasons in Sri Lanka Sri Lanka’s two monsoon seasons can often leave travellers confused as to the best time to visit. Essentially, the south-western monsoon runs between May and July. This tends to be the gentler of the two monsoons and, as the name suggests, affects only the southwest of the country.

Sri Lanka’s weather patterns are made rather complex by the two monsoon seasons. The Yala monsoon occurs between May and August, swamping the south-western part of the island with heavy rain. This is followed by a dry season in that region between December and March.

November brings seasonal shift of winds. North-east monsoon brings humid air masses from Bengal Bay and slopes of central highland receive their portion of precipitation. South-western part of Sri Lanka stays untouched protected by mountains. November is the heist of tourist’s season.

The rainy season in Sri Lanka starts in May and ends in October – that’s in the southwest (as you can see above). In the northeast, it starts in October and lasts all the way up to January (look at the image below). The average temperature hangs around the 30 degrees Celsius mark and doesn’t really change that much throughout the year.

The south-western monsoon brings rain to the south-west of Sri Lanka between May and September, while the dry season in this region runs from December to March. In the north and eastern coastal regions of the country, the weather is influenced by the north-eastern monsoon, which brings wind and rain between October and January, and drier weather between May and September.

Sri Lanka sees a lot of rainfall. The monsoon brings rain from May to July to the western, southern and central regions of the island. The north-east monsoon causes rains in the northern and eastern regions in December and January. Is July a good time to visit Sri Lanka? July is a good time to visit Sri Lanka, BUT, it will be hot and quite humid on west coast areas, the east coast will be hot and humid too, but with less chance of rain.

The second Intermonsoon period of October – November is the period with the most evenly balanced distribution of rainfall over Sri Lanka. Almost the entire island receives in excess of 400 mm of rain during this season, with the Southwestern slops receiving higher rainfall in the range 750mm to 1200 mm (Weweltalawa Estate in Yatiyantota recording 1219 mm)

Sri Lanka mostly has either welcoming warm weather or comforting cool weather throughout the year heavily influenced by its monsoon seasons. If you are a traveller looking for a cosy vacation in the country, it’s best to avoid the Months April to June and October to November.

Unsurprisingly, the rainfall pattern will probably be one of the most important factors in your decision of when to go to Sri Lanka. The main southwest (“Yala”) monsoon brings rain to the west and southwest coasts and the hill country from April or May to September and is wettest from April to June.
