The reality is that for space exploration, there will not be a military model, and that is where all this is just fun stuff. If there IS a need for military in space, right now that is the jurisdiction of the Air Force/Space Force. For true deep space exploration, both NASA and the ESA do NOT use a Navy model.

The Air Force does not procedures for vehicles larger than a transport plane. The Navy does. Since we don't have space fleets (yet) sci-fi writers have to work with what they know. The Navy's procedures are much more readily adaptable. Notice that most space ships are named like Naval things (eg Battleships, Cruisers, Frigates).

With the space culture’s destiny in its own hands as the Space Corps, it will be able to secure its transition into a naval service at the proper time without interference from the Air Force or the Navy.

Last month, Rep. Dan Crenshaw of Texas issued an amendment to the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, calling for the Space Force to use “the same system and rank structure as is used in the Navy.” This threw a monkey wrench in the nascent military branch’s plans to formally announce its rank structure.
